A lot of work is required to prepare a classroom for students. Teachers and tutors often must cut their breaks short and spend their own money to do everything it takes so that instruction can take place on the first day of school. This preparation is in demand in late summer, but also after other large school breaks year round.
Without the help of volunteers, teachers and tutors may need to use more class time to finish getting their classrooms ready. This takes away from the short time students have to learn. Your service will ensure more of the teacher's time will be dedicated to helping students learn.
Requirements:
- Entry Level (Most adults should be able to help)
- No legal restraint against you working with or around children
Helpful skills to have:
- Average computer and typing skills
- Experience using a printer or photocopier
- Experience creating arts and crafts
How you can serve: During an average school week, a teacher will have many things you can do which involve correcting assignments and maintaining regular classroom activities. Yet after a large school break, a lot of important preparations can be done. These include sorting supplies for new students, copying papers, helping to create displays and bulletin boards, organizing the materials in a classroom, and securing desk, chairs and other important parts of a classroom. Some janitorial tasks (cleaning desks, vacuuming, etc.) may also be needed.
What you should wear:
- Average comfortable clothing that would be appropriate around children.
What you should bring:
- A water bottle
- Clean work gloves (in the case of transporting furniture, chairs, shelves, etc.)
Best times to volunteer:
- During long school breaks (such as summer break, winter break, spring break, etc.) Usually the days just before school starts are days volunteers are most needed.

- Any local school
- New schools
- Recently remodeled schools
- Elementary schools
- Middle schools
- High schools
- Private schools
- Charter schools
